CAPITOL HEIGHTS CIVIC ASSOCIATION REGULAR MEETING
June 12, 2007

The Capitol Heights Civic Association held its regular meeting on June 12, 2007 at the Capitol Heights United Methodist Church. The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p. m. by Helen Harris, President.

Helen welcomed everyone and introduced our newly elected officers.

Helen announced Lynn Bryant has had to resign his position on EC due to job changes.

Our constitution doesn’t specifically address resignations, but refers to Robert’s Rules of Order. Robert’s Rules of Order states an election must be held when a resignation occurs after the meeting has adjourned. EC proposes that since the election meeting was just last month that we pull the ballots and the next nominee per the votes be named to replace Lynn. If an election is held it would be August before the election can occur. A motion was made to open the envelope and use last month’s ballots. Motion passed with no opposition.

A review of the ballots determined Bruce George is next in line for Member-At-Large. A motion was made that should Bruce George not be able to accept, the position goes to the next person on the list. Motion carried without opposition.

Helen addressed neighborhood safety issues and recommended everyone turn on their porch lights. Call police on all matters dealing with nose, theft, parking, abandoned vehicles, etc. Most important, do not react as victims. Stand up for yourself.

Marilyn Rutherford chairs our welcome committee with assistance from Geisla Langley. The welcome package includes homemade bread and some other items.

Helen announced Cindy Thornhill, Cindy Keeping, and Cynthia McCollister will serve as co-chairs for the Centennial Homecoming Celebration. Everyone needs to talk up the Centennial Homecoming Celebration to be held on September 13-14, 2008.

Cindy Keeping is chairing the Christmas Float and invites participants to her home on June 23rd at 6PM to begin plans for the float.

This year’s Christmas Tour will feature homes north of Madison Avenue. Organizers are still needed for food, publicity, safety, and homes.

Jewell Pitts will chair November’s Pot Luck Thanksgiving dinner.

Helen reports they aren’t ready to install the historic marked for the Capitol Heights Elementary School that burned. They are having difficulty finding information on:
• Architect
• When it opened
• A clear photo of the school
• Information on the school held in a resident’s home beginning in 1908 (home of James Turner located on the corner of James and California).

Volunteers are still needed to assist with monitoring city boards and activities of interest to Capitol Heights. Those boards are: City Council, ARB, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustments, and Historic Preservation Meetings.

The City Council and ARB most often have issues of interest to Capitol heights. Terry Robinson reports he already monitors the City Council and the Planning Commission and will watch for items of interest to Capitol Heights.

A motion to adjourn was adopted. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:40 PM.

Cynthia McCollister, Secretary
