Minutes Regular Meeting June 13, 2006

June 13, 2006 Tuesday night 7:01 p.m.

Helen introduced herself as the newly elected President of the Civic Association and then introduced each officer and the EC board members. She discussed future endeavors of our association.
• Mt. Meigs project – creating sidewalks, street lights, etc
• Linda Wool and the community planning with the city.
• The associations main goal of gaining more participation in the meetings and activities.

• Cindy Keeping read the minutes from the last meeting May 9th, 2006 and Mike Deaplo read the Treasurers report.
Old Business:
• Shed – requesting folks to call other folks to remind them to empty out their own storage of any items that belong to the association so it can all be stored in the association’s shed.
• Map of Capitol Heights w/boundaries was requested and Carole King and Mike Dapelo stated that had maps with all of the historic areas noted.
• Microphone – Helen asked for the where abouts of the microphone and Carole King indicated that she felt it belong to the church.
• CH calendar – formalize the dates for the different events so that the public will know when our events are to happen, i.e. Christmas tour, Spring Fling, Fall Fling, etc.
• August newsletter will be announcing our upcoming speakers: July – Linda Wool, August – Russell Stringer.
• July 4th: we will be having a watermelon cutting and seed spitting contest so that folks can stop by for a slice of cold watermelon on their way to the fireworks display at Maxwell. 6p.m. at Armstrong Park
• Ice Cream social will be held the last Friday (before school starts) at the church. Invitations will homemade ice cream recipe will be giving out for folks to mix their own custard and ice cream churn where the association will provide ice and salt.
• Needed volunteers : Deliver newsletters; clean the lions; food providers for the meetings; ice cream social; watermelon social.
• Tim Vaught : Spoke about watering the existing trees that were planted last fall. He asked that we each make our neighbors aware of the trees that need watering and gave the following suggestions: a.)Fill up a Styrofoam cooler with water and put a few small holes in the bottom to allow water to slowly seep out and water the trees. b.) Fill up a large black plastic bag with water and again, put small holes in the bottom to allow water to seep out.
• Survey: An article in the August newsletter giving out the results of the past survey concerning the goals of the association and calendar events.
• Dead line: For the upcoming newsletter will be July 26th – send all articles to Cynthia McCollister. Newsletter delivery will be August 2nd through 6th.
New Business:

• Brochures were offered about the upcoming concerts sponsered by the Old Alabama Town and Red Cross booklets on Hurricane disaster preparedness.
• Joan Asher made us aware of a Blood drive at the church on July 9th from 10:00 – 2:00.
• Membership drives ideas were discussed. Possibilties were a Membership month, membership dinners and membership contests.
• Neighborhood night out in the fall.
• Marilyn Rutherford volunteered to chair the Welcoming Committee.
• Neighborhood Grant money suggestions: Entry ways in the community spruced up, Computers, yard tools, lions statuary. Carole King made us aware that participation was required to qualify for grant money and that with the cut backs the mayor has announced there may not be much money available.
• Midtown or Downtown or Uptown??: According to Carole King, all the area on the inside of the bypass is considered Midtown.
• Cindy Keeping volunteered to chair the Christmas Tour of Homes this year.
• Brad Dailey volunteered to chair the Christmas Float committee for the Christmas parade this year.
• Kathy Blackman and Rebecca Williams agreed to co-chair the Watermelon gathering in July and the Ice Cream social in August.
The meeting was officially closed at 7:58 p.m.
