Capitol Heights Civic Association
Tuesday, September 12, 2006
President Helen Harris called the meeting to order at 7:10 at the Capitol Heights Methodist Church. She encouraged everyone to sign in and to volunteer on the sheets for upcoming events.
Fall Fling is planned for October 28th with a potluck, plant swap and pumpkin carving. An event chairman and other volunteers are needed. If no one volunteers to chair the event it will be cancelled.
No minutes were presented as Cynthia McCollister was not present.
Treasurer Mike DaPelo gave the overall bank balance as $8230.67.
Ms. Harris thanked Rebecca Williams and Kathie Blackmon for co-chairing the August ice cream social. Despite bad weather it was very successful, in part to Jewel Pitts’ candles and Debbie George’s hand-churned ice cream!
Committee Reports
Christmas—Cindy Keeping encouraged everyone to signup for Christmas activities early. This year the tour will focus on the south side of Madison Avenue from the Medicine Shoppe to South Madison Terrace. Personal contacts are needed to encourage owners to participate.
Beautification—Cindy Keeping reported that the landscaping of Armstrong Park will begin with a planting day on Saturday, October 21st. Paul Ivey has volunteered to assist.
Old Business
As the weather is cooling, a cleanup day will be scheduled soon for the Lee Place lions.
Because of computer problems, an e-mail from Charles Butron, who is interested in hosting small discussion groups about the neighborhood plan, was not forwarded—but will be soon. Anyone who is interested should contact Helen. Carole King announced that the Downtown Revitalization Charrettes were happening this week and everyone should visit the open design studio to see how our neighborhood will be affected.
T-shirts are still available for $5.00. Another design will be printed soon and Helen asked for input as to what style most people preferred and mentioned the possibility of selling Capitol Hts. mugs.
The next ARB meeting will be on September 26th. The only thing on the agenda is the approval of a storage shed on N. Pennsylvania Avenue. All of the Capitol Heights requests were approved last month.
New Business
Speaker at the October meeting will be Mayor Bright. November meeting will be the neighborhood Thanksgiving pot-luck.
Terry Robinson will ask some of the residents in some areas adjacent to the official boundaries of Capitol Heights if they would like to be a part of the association.
Sandra Nickel applied for a community grant from LWT Associates. They will design a brochure for the historic neighborhoods. Capitol Heights submitted photographs to be considered.
Loose leaf pickup by Sanitation Department will be from October 1 until April 15.
Since there is difficulty in getting volunteers to deliver the newsletters, the EC is considering mailing them if more advertising can be sold to offset the costs.
Cindy Keeping and Paul Ivey are exploring the possibility of selling memorial bricks to help landscape Armstrong Park. Mayor’s Conference for BONDS is Friday, Sept. 22 with deadline for registering Friday, Sept. 15. Speaker will be Shoshana Johnson, captured in Iraq with Jessica Lynch.
A show of hands indicated the members present prefer to keep the meeting time at 7 PM rather than changing to 6 or 6:30 PM. Thanks given to Doris Cousins for providing sandwiches and to Rebecca Williams for cake and fruit and Kathie Blackmon for cheese and crackers.
Presentation was given about Neighborhood Watch by Corporal Rogers from Montgomery Police Department with guest Kathy Draper, President and Neighborhood Watch Coordinator from the Lee Oaks neighborhood.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:45.
